Dr. Carolyn O’Daniel, Dean of Allied Health and Nursing, Jefferson Community and Technical College, Louisville, Kentucky

Dr. Carolyn O’Daniel obtained a Baccalaureate in English from the University of Kentucky, an Associate in Applied Science in Respiratory Care from Lexington Technical Institute, a Masters of Science in Education - Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kentucky.

In her respiratory care career, Carolyn began as a technician and quickly advanced to the position of the director of a respiratory therapy program at Lake Cumberland Medical Center. In 1976 Dr. O’Daniel’s career path turned from the health care setting to the academic setting when she became an instructor and clinical coordinator at Lexington Technical Institute, where she taught for four years. Dr. O’Daniel began with Jefferson Community College in 1980 as a professor and academic program coordinator for the respiratory care program where she served for many years. In 1997, she moved to JCC’s parent facility, the University of Kentucky, as Coordinator of Program Planning and Development for the Community College System, and served in that position through the creation of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). In 1999 Dr. O’Daniel was promoted to the System Director for Academic Affairs where she continued to oversee curriculum development, program planning and other matters related to academic affairs for KCTCS. In 2004, she accepted an interim one-year assignment as Chief Administrative Officer for Central Kentucky Technical College during it’s consolidation with Lexington Community College to form the new Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Currently, Dr. O’Daniel is serving as the Dean of Allied Health and Nursing for the Jefferson Community and Technical College, a college serving fifteen thousand students virtually and on five campuses. The college offers degree, diploma and certificate programs in eleven health occupations, and is in the process of adding two new program areas.

Dr. O’Daniel has served on the national Board of Directors for the American Association for Respiratory Care and the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Care (now CoARC). She has numerous visiting teams for The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
